Acupuncture for Pregnancy

Yes, acupuncture is safe and effective during pregnancy.

The practice of acupuncture during pregnancy dates back for over 2,000 years. Acupuncture is not a substitute for Western prenatal medical care. Instead, it offers complementary care that has many benefits. Since acupuncture has very few side effects, many pregnant women seek acupuncture to enhance wellness during pregnancy and labor, and as an alternative to medication for many common pregnancy complaints.

Chinese medicine puts a strong emphasis on pregnancy wellness, because we believe that a healthy and pleasant pregnancy has a positive impact on the outcome of the baby’s health as well as their temperament. Pregnancy should be a wonderful time in a woman’s life, and Chinese medicine practice makes every effort for the mother-to-be to feel healthy and happy. Feeling relaxed translates to less muscle tension and gland constriction, and therefore, allows babies to receive optimal nourishment in the womb. In addition to acupuncture, our practitioners give helpful lifestyle and dietary recommendations, as well as tips for family members to support the mother.

Acupuncture has been shown to:

  • Prevent potential miscarriage
  • Alleviate morning sickness
  • Relieve migraines
  • Reduce exhaustion and boost energy
  • Stopping bleeding or spotting in the early months of pregnancy
  • Extinguish heartburn
  • Ease insomnia
  • Prevent or shrink hemorrhoids
  • Ease aches and pains from sciatica to carpal tunnel to back pain
  • Reduce swelling due to water retention
  • Treat depression both during and after pregnancy

Working jointly with OBGYNs and midwives, we have also successfully treated the following conditions:

  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Cholestasis
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Induction

While acupuncture is generally safe during pregnancy, treatments can cause muscle contractions, and the uterus is not an exception. Our practitioners here have extensive experience dealing with pregnant women and are stateboard and nationally certified.

Getting acupuncture on a regular basis during pregnancy can help you de-stress and enjoy this incredible time in your life more fully.

I initially came to Annie Wang acupuncture as it was recommended following an IVF embryo transfer and I ended up sticking with weekly sessions with Jeannette through almost my entire pregnancy. I really enjoyed her approach to treatment incorporating both a western and eastern medicine perspective, always taking the time to explain what she was doing and why, as well as lifestyle recommendations to compliment the treatments. You can tell she really genuinely cares and I always looked forward to our sessions. I highly recommend Annie Wang Acupuncture and specifically Jeanette!

I got a recommendation for Annie on Mommies FB group and had a great experience. I had placenta previa in my pregnancy and Annie was able to do her magic (without providing false hopes) and guess what? It migrated up! Even though there was very little chance for it so late in the pregnancy. I was so pleased with Annie's services and just how caring she is I also signed up my husband for multiple sessions to treat his migraines....The staff is super friendly, offices are super clean and comfortable. Highly recommend! Thank you Annie and the team! 🙂

I was suffering from debilitating back pain when I found out I was pregnant. After hearing about the wonders of acupuncture I decided to give it a try. Annie explains everything thoroughly and the treatment is consistently relaxing. I've noticed a definite improvement in pain levels and stress levels after every visit. This is my second followup review for Annie Wang acupuncture. I have been seeing Annie for almost exact one year, and wow it has been such an amazing experience! I went to Annie first because of my back pain, which had been bothering me for years. A few sessions by Annie got me pain free and back to my yoga and running routines. I continued to see her every week after I found out that I was pregnant. She helped me with morning sickness and fatigue, and allowed me to practice yoga without back issues throughout the entire pregnancy (I stopped one week before my due date). After I delivered a healthy and happy baby girl, I had issues with lactation - low production with blocked milk ducts. I went to her for help again. Three sessions with her, my milk started flowing! Do I need to say more, ladies? For the record, I never had any experience with Chinese medicine or acupuncture before seeing Annie, and have to confess that I was very skeptical. Now I am a believer.
