Common Endometriosis Symptoms

Endometriosis is a disorder in which the endometrium (the tissue lining the inside of the uterus) grows into outside of the uterus where it shouldn’t be such as the pelvis, fallopian tubes, ovaries, intestines, or other organs. Believed to affect approximately 10% of women, common signs include:
  • Dysmenorrhea- Severe and debilitating menstrual cramps
  • Heavy or long periods
  • Lower back pain during menstruation
  • Severe migraines
  • Infertility
  • Nausea during menstruation
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Pain during or after sexual intercourse
  • Pain with bowel movements or urination
Women often learn they have endometriosis when they are having problems conceiving and seek treatment for infertility. This condition can sometimes be mistaken for other causes of pelvic pain including IBS, ovarian cysts, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). While the exact cause of endometriosis is not known, visit your physician if you are experiencing symptoms.

Remedies for Endometriosis

While remedies used at home will not “cure” endometriosis, there are measures you can take to help ease the pain, inflammation and other symptoms. Depending on your symptoms you might want to try some of the following suggestions. Anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal remedies. Ibuprofen, naproxen and other over-the-counter products that are labeled “anti-inflammatory” help reduce pain such as cramping, headaches, lower back pain, etc. Ginger root powder also works to alleviate pain when taken in doses of 500 mg. two or three times per day. Turmeric is another one you may want to try whether in tea or capsule form, as it has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Try an anti-inflammatory diet. While it won’t provide immediate relief from pain or other symptoms, the right diet can help with endometriosis symptoms over time. Cut out dairy, caffeine and refined sugars found in processed foods as much as possible, and increase your intake of ginger, salmon, blueberries, green leafy vegetables, broccoli and other foods with anti-inflammatory properties. Pelvic massage and heat from a heating pad or a relaxing warm bath also help to relieve pain and cramping.

Endometriosis – Natural Treatment

Traditional endometriosis treatment often involves the use of OTC or prescription pain medications, hormone therapy using oral contraceptives, shots, and laparoscopic surgery in which the endometrial tissue on affected areas is removed. Many women prefer non-invasive alternatives to surgery, which can result in adhesions, scarring and other problems. Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, proper nutrition and other natural treatment is often highly effective for women who have this painful condition. Perhaps you are seeing a fertility doctor or infertility specialist in Los Altos because endometriosis has made it difficult or impossible for you to become pregnant. The excruciating pain, heavy bleeding, cramps and other symptoms often leave women seeking treatment. Acupuncture is a treatment that has been proven to promote wellness and balance in the body. The needles promote circulation and triggers the release of endorphins, and the effects are relaxation and pain reduction. Acupuncture balances “qi” or the flow of circulation and energy in the body while helping balance hormones as well. Blood flow is improved, which nourishes the uterus and reproductive tissues. In Chinese medicine acupuncture focuses on improving “blood stasis,” which essentially means blood has accumulated in areas where it should not be. There are many benefits of acupuncture and Chinese herbs for women with endometriosis. At Annie Wang Acupuncture we want to help you understand how your body can heal itself using methods that are completely natural and non-invasive. Are you ready to enjoy overall wellness and improved fertility? To learn more about endometriosis treatment, we invite those in the Bay Area including Belmont and Los Altos to contact us today.

I've been getting acupuncture twice a week for the past 5 weeks, mostly from Annie and Brittany. I suffer from endometriosis and was in constant pain for almost two years prior to seeing them. My next option, according to my doctor, was a hysterectomy. My pain has reduced almost completely, with the exception of some cramping around my period. Annie and Brittany are both so reassuring and gifted at what they do. I almost can't believe how much I'm progressing and how quickly. I'm hopeful about possibly making a full recovery. I cannot recommend them enough!
