Woman preparing for pregnancy

Thinking About Getting Pregnant This Fall? Why Preparation Matters

September often feels like a beginning. A new school year. A new routine. A fresh start.

For some women, it is also the season when they begin thinking seriously about growing their family. Maybe you’ve decided that you’re ready to start trying to conceive. Maybe you’ve been trying for a while. Maybe you’re preparing for IVF or a frozen embryo transfer. Or perhaps you’re not quite ready to begin treatment but want time to prepare your body and mind. Whatever your situation, fertility care doesn’t have to begin on the day you start treatment.

Preparing for pregnancy is about more than one appointment

When you’re trying to conceive, it can be tempting to focus entirely on the outcome:

  • Did I ovulate?
  • Did the transfer work?
  • Did the pregnancy test turn positive?

But fertility is a process, and there are many things worth paying attention to along the way. That includes your sleep, stress levels, nutrition, movement, menstrual cycle, and overall health. It also means making sure you’re receiving appropriate medical evaluation and care when needed.

Acupuncture can be incorporated into this broader approach.

How acupuncture fits into fertility care

In traditional Chinese medicine, fertility care is individualized and may focus on the menstrual cycle, overall health, stress, sleep, and other symptoms. From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture is best viewed as complementary care, rather than a replacement for fertility evaluation or treatment. Patients often seek acupuncture during fertility treatment because they want additional support while navigating what can be a physically and emotionally demanding process. That support may include stress relief, relaxation, sleep, pain relief, or overall well-being.

For some patients, the acupuncture appointment itself becomes an important pause in a process that can otherwise feel highly medicalized and scheduled.

What about IVF and embryo transfer?

This is an area where it’s particularly important to distinguish between supporting the patient and claiming to improve fertility outcomes. Acupuncture has been studied extensively in connection with IVF and embryo transfer. However, the evidence is mixed.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has concluded that acupuncture around the time of embryo transfer has not consistently been shown to improve live-birth rates. That doesn’t mean acupuncture has no place in fertility care. It means we should be honest about what the research tells us. We don’t tell patients that acupuncture will make an embryo implant. We don’t promise that acupuncture will increase the chance of pregnancy. And we don’t want you to feel that if a cycle isn’t successful, you somehow didn’t do enough.

Instead, we focus on what we can support: your overall well-being and how you feel throughout the process.

Fertility treatment can be stressful

Even when treatment is going smoothly, fertility care can involve frequent appointments, medications, blood tests, ultrasounds, procedures, waiting, uncertainty, and difficult emotions. It’s completely understandable to feel anxious, overwhelmed, hopeful, frustrated, or all of these things at once.

Taking care of your nervous system and your emotional well-being isn’t an indulgence. We believe it’s important to take care of yourself. Acupuncture may be one tool that helps you create a little space during a demanding season.

When should you start?

There isn’t one perfect time to begin acupuncture.

Some patients begin before trying to conceive. Others start while undergoing fertility evaluation or treatment. Some use acupuncture during an IVF cycle or around an embryo transfer because they find it supportive. Your treatment plan should depend on your individual circumstances and should be coordinated appropriately with your fertility physician, especially during active fertility treatment.

If you haven’t already, make sure you’re receiving appropriate preconception care from your physician or fertility specialist.

Your fertility journey is not just about the outcome

When you’re trying to become pregnant, it’s easy for every month to become a test.

But you are more than a cycle result. You are a person navigating something deeply personal. Your care should make room for your physical health, emotions, stress, sleep, and life outside of fertility treatment.

Whether you’re just beginning to think about pregnancy or already working with a fertility specialist, acupuncture can be one part of a thoughtful, individualized approach to your care.

You don’t have to navigate the journey alone.

If you’re considering acupuncture as part of your fertility care, we’re happy to discuss your goals and help you determine how it may fit alongside your medical treatment.
